Vitamin Supplements
Although most people are not deficient in vitamins, taking supplements can be helpful to those who are. There is a very wide (and confusing) range of vitamin doses available at the drug store. We recommend the following daily supplements:
mcg | mg | IU | |
---|---|---|---|
Biotin | 5000 mcg | 5 mg | 500 IU |
Folic Acid | 800 mcg | 0.8 mg | N/A |
Vitamin D | 125 mcg | .125 mg | 5000 IU |
Iron (women only) | 18000 mcg | 18 mg | N/A |
Finasteride (Propecia®, Proscar®)
Oral finasteride blocks an enzyme that converts Testosterone to DHT. Decreasing DHT may regrow hair, stabilize hair loss, or reduce hair loss. The benefits of finasteride will be lost if the drug is discontinued. Sexual side effects including decreased libido and impaired performance have been reported, and if any are experienced, patient must contact provider immediately for management.
Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine®)
Topical minoxidil alters potassium channels in hair follicles, resulting in decreased shedding and increased hair growth. The benefits of topical minoxidil will be lost if the drug is discontinued. Side effects include scalp itching. Topical minoxidil is available in both liquid and foam vehicles. Both work the same, but the liquid form is more likely to cause scalp itching. Women must discontinue topical minoxidil if pregnant or breast feeding.
Oral Minoxidil
Oral minoxidil is an antihypertensive drug, used at sub-therapeutic dosages to reduce hair loss while avoiding unwanted side effects. Oral minoxidil alters potassium channels in hair follicles, resulting in decreased shedding and increased hair growth. The benefits of oral minoxidil will be lost if the drug is discontinued. Side effects include scalp itching. Women must discontinue oral minoxidil if pregnant or breast feeding.
Spironolactone
Spironolactone is a diuretic and anti-androgen, typically used at high dosages to reduce hair loss. The benefits of spironolactone will be lost if the drug is discontinued. Side effects include irregular periods and dizziness. Women must discontinue spironolactone if pregnant or breast feeding.
Photobiomodulation (PBM)
Photobiomodulation (light therapy) using the LaserCap® improves mitochondrial function, releases growth factors, and decreases inflammation, resulting in decreased hair shedding, increased growth, and improving hair characteristics. The LaserCap® is used 30 minutes every other day.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma is a growth factor-rich blood fraction, concentrated from a patient’s own blood, and injected into an area of hair loss. PRP may work by enhancing stem cell activity, and may decrease shedding and increase hair growth. After three monthly treatments, additional treatments will be performed every six months.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
Scalp Micropigmentation is a permanent form of camouflage whereby tiny pigment dots are placed into the upper dermal layer, producing the appearance of stubble and creating the illusion of hair density. SMP can be used to hide scars, add apparent density to an operative area, and add apparent density to a non-operative area. Three treatments are required, separated by two weeks.
Topical Camouflage
Topical camouflage (Dermatch®) is a temporary form of camouflage, in which a special make-up product is applied to the scalp, decreasing the visible contrast between scalp and hair, and creating the illusion of greater density.
Hair Transplantation
Hair transplant surgery involves moving healthy, permanently growing hairs from the back of the head to areas of hair loss. Large sessions can be performed in a single day, often producing a dramatic change in appearance.
